Mass balance of the Totten basin in East Antarctica: Estimation and calibration from ground, air and space-based observations (TOT-Cal)Linked to this record are a report providing further details about the project, as well as the data from the project. Public Summary Regions of Antarctica are undergoing significant change in response to the Earth's changing climate. This project will provide a state of the art contemporary insight into the changing behaviour of the Totten drainage basin in East Antarctica - an area of vital impor

Leopard and Weddell seal program2000/2001 season 31 quad based surveys were conducted along the pack-ice edge to identify where leopard seals could be accessed. 31 one hour aerial surveys were also conducted to identify the position and number of seals in the region. 36 boat based surveys were conducted to identify the size and sex of leopard seals, whether they were a resight and the possibility of sedating seals. There were a

Bathymetric Chart of Lutzow-Holmbukta, (Antarctica): Special Map Series of National Institute of Polar Research, No.4The submarine topography of Lutzow-Holm Bay, East Antarctica, was investigated by radio-echo sounding from the surface of sea ice. The program started in 1960, but the intensive surveys were conducted in 1968, 1973 and in particular 1981. The data were compiled as the bathymetric chart of the Lutzow-Holm Bay. Complicated topography formed by former glacial erosion exerted by a former expanded ice

Snow pit measurements from FINNARP 2009 snow teamDataset contains data from 15 snow pits along a snow line. The depth of these snow pits was approximately 1.5 meters. Nine 0.5m meters deep snow pits were also measured. The length of snow line was 230 km, following the standard route from Rappen to SWEDARP field station Svea via Aboa/Wasa stations. The snow pit measurements were made along the same snow line as in the earlier FINNARP expeditions.

Antarctic Sea Ice Thickness Mapping in McMurdo SoundIn-depth research has been conducted into sea ice thickness in the McMurdo Sound. The subice platelet layer thickness under sea ice was measured in regular intervals at two North-South oriented profiles and four east-west oriented profiles. Holes were drilled at regular intervals into sea ice at measurement sites about 5 km apart. At these holes sea ice thickness and snow depth on top of the sea i

Light transfer measurements in the snow pack from FINNARP 2009 snow teamData set contains light transfer measurements in Antarctic snow pack using visible-near infrared spectroradiometer and PAR sensors. These measurements were done during FINNARP 2009 expedition in December 2009 and in January 2010. Spectroradiometer measurements were done in 7 different locations (points). PAR sensors measured continuously in fixed location. With the spectroradiometer the light tran

The Glaciological Basis of Palaeoclimatic Reconstructions of Ice-Shelf MorainesThe research is giving us an understanding of the entrainment, transfer and deposition of sediment by ice shelves. The investigation of the structure, composition and motion of the Southern McMurdo Ice shelf will develop a model for the accretion and transfer of ice and debris in ice shelves and a glaciological basis for palaeoclimatic reconstructions derived from ice shelf moraines. Defining the

Sea Ice Mass Balance in the Antarctic - Remote SensingMonthly average sea ice concentration for February to May, 2007 and June to September 2007 show regionally where the ice edge for the month in question equator ward/pole ward of the 29-year mean. Based on the 29 year time series (1979-2007), the following rankings were observed for monthly averaged Southern Ocean sea ice extent from January to August 2007: January 2007 was the fourth lowest Januar

Land and sea ice sructure west and south of Ross Island measured by ground penetrating radar, UAV, and helicopter EM bird - K053_2009_2012_NZ_1This data set decribes surface and volume properties of snow and ice to validate radar satellite measurements. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) at 500 and 1000GHz provides information on snow layers and thickness near the surface at two sites on the McMurdo Ice Shelf, one site at Ross Island, and on the landfast and new sea ice in McMurdo Sound. A 50MHz antenna is used to measure total ice thickness
