Replication Data and Code for “Forward-looking Carbon Regulation Shocks and Corporate Green Innovation: The Mediating Role of Signaling Effects”

Listed in ScienceDB

This dataset contains the replication materials associated with the paper “Forward-looking Carbon Regulation Shocks and Corporate Green Innovation: The Mediating Role of Signaling Effects.” The study uses a sample of Chinese A-share listed firms from 2015 to 2024.

Description

By matching listed firms with customs trade records, it identifies whether a firm exported HS products covered by the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) to the EU before the policy shock.

Taking the European Commission’s 2021 CBAM legislative proposal as the policy shock, the study employs a difference-in-differences approach to examine the impact of forward-looking carbon regulation on corporate green technological innovation. The cleaned analytical dataset is an unbalanced firm-year panel containing 40,097 observations, 5,489 firms, and 36 variables. The main variables include green patent indicators, CBAM policy exposure measures, difference-in-differences interaction terms, firm-level financial and governance characteristics, carbon information disclosure indicators, and variables used in the heterogeneity analysis.

The accompanying Stata code reproduces the descriptive statistics, baseline regressions, parallel-trends tests, placebo tests, propensity score matching difference-in-differences analysis, alternative dependent-variable tests, robustness checks, mechanism analysis, and heterogeneity analysis reported in the paper, and generates the corresponding tables, figures, and summary results. Corporate green innovation data are obtained from the Chinese Research Data Services Platform (CNRDS).

Data on firm financial characteristics, corporate governance, ownership, and carbon information disclosure are mainly obtained from the CSMAR database. The CBAM policy exposure variables are constructed by matching listed firms with customs trade records. This dataset contains only the cleaned derivative variables and analytical code required for the empirical analysis and does not include the original files downloaded from commercial databases.
