Listed in figshare and Loughborough Research Repository and GRANTS Data and UP Research Data Repository — shown once because both records carry DOI 10.6084/m9.figshare.33769897.v3

Overview

This dataset is the source data for our article Towards Sustainable Conservation: Balancing Commercial and Historical Colors to Revitalize Historic Districts.
Description
The research aims at exploring the relationship between facade color organization and pedestrian behavior, offering suggestions for the conservation and regeneration of historic districts.

The dataset provides street facade color configurations (analysis results, without raw images) and pedestrian activities (trajectory analyzing results and behavior indicators) across two historic districts in Nanjing, China.

Data Content and Key Variables

The dataset is structured across two primary categories of variables:

1.
Facade color and spatial metrics:

CH_c (commercial color harmony): Color harmony describes a state in which colors are arranged in a varied, well-proportioned, and orderly composition that is aesthetically pleasing. In this study, commercial color harmony was introduced to measure the direction and intensity of the influence of commercial-element colors on historical-element colors. It is calculated as (O_c/C_c).

C_c (commercial color complexity): In M-S theory, color complexity measures the amount of information transmitted to the observer by all colors in the surrouding environment.

In our research, commercial color complexity equals the total number of extracted commercial colors, plus the sum of the number of pairs with inconsistent the total number of extracted commercial colors (NC), plus the sum of the number of pairs with inconsistent Hue, the number of pairs with inconsistent Value, and the number of pairs with inconsistent Chroma, across all historical–commercial element color pairs P_{hc}.

O_c (commercial color order): Color order reflects the degree of clarity in the organizational rules of color information in the surrounding environment.
In our research, the commercial color order reflects the degree of clarity in the visual organizational rules of all historical-commercial element color combinations in the street facades of historic districts.

Ra (ratio of active storefronts): The ratio of active storefronts is calculated as the number of storefronts that are operating during their primary business hours at the time of measurement, excluding entrances and exits, divided by the total number of storefronts.

2.
Pedestrian behavioral metrics:

In this study, pedestrian activities were first classified by identifying trajectories that were clearly stationary or exhibited a clear orientation. The remaining trajectories were defined as Searching Behaviors. These behaviors were further divided into three categories based on trajectory sinuosity: Wander, Area-Restricted Search (ARS), and Pacing.
Together with Stop and Orientation, five behavioral patterns were identified: Stop, Orientation, Wander, ARS, and Pacing.

TD (trajectory diversity): The information entropy of the four trajectory types within a given street segment: Wander, ARS, Pacing, and Stop. It measures the richness of pedestrian groups' movement trajectories.

TC (trajectory complexity): The global accumulation of changes in direction and length of the trajectory vectors on either side of each trajectory sampling point.
It measures the complexity of individual pedestrian movement trajectories.

Rs (ratio of searching behaviors): The proportion of the four trajectory types (Wander, ARS, Pacing, and Stop) relative to the total number of trajectories. It reflects the degree to which pedestrians in a given street segment engage in optional and social activities.

Is (stay intensity): It equals the arithmetic mean of standardized average number of stops and standardized average dwell time for a given street segment.
It reflects the degree to which pedestrians stop and linger in a given street segment.

Va (average walking velocity): The arithmetic mean of pedestrians' velocity within a given street segment.

Beyond these, oTC, oIs and oVa are the trajectory complexity, stay intensity and average walking velocity of orienting pedestrians (Orientation); sTC, sIs, sVa are the trajectory complexity, stay intensity, average walking velocity of searching pedestrians (Wander, ARS, Pacing).

Explanation for folders

"0.results_of_color_cluster": The study first performed clustering and then calculated weighted averages to identify the three dominant colors of historical elements and the top eight dominant colors of commercial elements that constitute the facades of historic districts.
If fewer than eight dominant colors were identified for commercial elements, all identified dominant colors were included in the subsequent calculations.

"1.O_C_CH_of_each_image": Color indicators calculated for each sampled photograph.

"2.original_trajectory": Pedestrian trajectory data directly extracted from the video.

"3.corrected_trajectory": Pedestrian trajectories after eliminating trajectory-point drift caused by mutual target occlusion and limitations in detection-model accuracy.

"4.trajectory_clusters_before_merge": Preliminary (coarse) classification of pedestrian trajectories.

"5.trajectory_clusters_after_merge": Further clustering and merging of pedestrian trajectories based on the previous step, resulting in the five target trajectory types.

"6.total_pedestrian_behavior_indicators": Behavioral indicators calculated for all pedestrians based on their trajectories.

"7.orienting_pedestrian_behavior_indicators": Behavioral indicators for orienting pedestrians.

"8.searching_pedestrian_behavior_indicators": Behavior indicators for searching pedestrians.

Some sampling points yielded fewer than eight dominant colors of commercial elements.
