Joint Food and Energy Price Increases and Inflation Differentials in Africa: Import Exposure and the Limits of Amplification

Listed in NCL Data

Description

This repository contains the data, code, documentation and research outputs supporting the study “Joint food and energy price increases and inflation in African economies.” The study examines whether simultaneous increases in global food and energy prices predict an additional inflation differential beyond their separate relationships with domestic inflation.

The archived monthly panel covers 54 African countries during 2000–2024, comprising 16,200 country-month rows before accounting for missing observations and estimation requirements.

The main contemporaneous estimation sample contains 6,860 observations from 33 countries; sample coverage varies across models and horizons. Sources include the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, Bank for International Settlements, Food and Agriculture Organization, Federal Reserve Bank of New York and documented external replication datasets.

The package includes archived source files, prepared datasets, variable definitions, source metadata, coverage and missingness diagnostics, Python scripts, model estimates, robustness and triangulation results, the manuscript, supplementary methods and results, and sixteen figures supplied as 300 dpi PNGs and vector PDFs.

A README, software requirements and SHA-256 checksums document the reproduction workflow and file integrity.

The analysis uses panel local projections with country and calendar-month effects, predetermined import exposures, dependence-aware inference and multiple-testing adjustments. Additional analyses examine alternative exposure definitions, extreme inflation observations, currency-unit changes, inflation regimes and an external oil-price instrument.

Missing observations are not interpolated or imputed.

The results represent conditional empirical relationships rather than a fully identified joint causal effect. The archive preserves source discrepancies and analytical limitations. Reproduction should use the archived inputs and documented software versions, because updated source vintages may produce different results.

Users should acknowledge this repository and cite the original data providers and replication sources.
