This paper revisits a high profile hunger strike among Zimbabweans detained in British removal centres in 2005.
Description
This paper revisits this episode with the aim of revealing a more complex politics around the strike and illuminating the personal and political effects of detention and deportability for the detainees, for broader diasporic communities, and British based anti-deportation activism. It is based on a broader study of the legacies of immigration detention for Zimbabwean asylum-seekers, which involved interviews with ex-detainees and members of their family, friends and visitors, exploring the problems ex-detainees faced after their release and the impact of detention and deportability on attitudes towards self and other, to the law, justice and belonging.
