Een groot voordeel is dat schattingen over het opleidingsniveau meestal betrouwbaarder zijn dan die uit de traditionele bronnen, met name wanneer het kleinere populaties betreft.

Een ander pluspunt is dat het merendeel van de gegevens afkomstig is uit onderwijs registers, en die staan bekend om hun goede kwaliteit. Een belangrijk doel van de onderwijs registraties is immers toezicht van het Rijk op de doelmatigheid van de onderwijsuitgaven, en om die reden worden de gegevens aan strenge accountantscontroles onderworpen. The Educational Attainment File (EAF) contains the highest attained education level of individuals at a reference date.

The educational attainment is derived by combining information on education levels from registers and from the Labour Force Survey. Two types of educational attainment are distinguished. For the first type, it is essential that someone is qualified at the highest level attained.

For the second type, it is sufficient to be educated at the highest level attained without necessarily being qualified; e.g. students still attending school before going in for an examination or who failed for their examination, and those who have left school without certificate. As there is no information on educational attainment for every citizen in the population, the EAF consists of a mixture of register and sample survey records.

A weighting strategy has been applied to make the EAF representative. A population weight equal to one is attached to the register records which amounts to counting them. Sample survey records are in general provided with a population weight unequal to one.

There is a protocol available for the proper statistical use of the EAF. It contains a tool which enables the computation of the coefficient of variation (relative standard error) for any cell outcome.
