Restoration Rocks. Trialling Gravel and Overburden Skimming for Fish Habitat Restoration
Listed in figshare

Braided rivers are unique ecosystems supporting high habitat heterogeneity and diverse species assemblages.
Description
Despite this, they face many pressures, including channelisation, gravel extraction and invasive species. In response, activities to restore natural braided river characteristics and dynamics such as riverbed widening, gravel replenishment, weed control, and the creation of in-channel habitats are being undertaken.
As such measures can be cost prohibitive to implement, a project on the Aparima River, New Zealand, aims to integrate commercial gravel extraction with braided river restoration. Isolated from the wetted channel by a protective gravel bund, Gravel and Overburden Skimming (GOS) removes invasive vegetation and recreates braid habitats while harvesting aggregate for commercial use. After extraction, high flow events breach into the restored area, enabling integration of new channels into the active braid plain, recreating terrestrial bars and shorelines, and widening wetted width.

The GOS approach aims to restore braided river morphology and processes, and due to its association with commercial activities, is more cost-effective than pure restoration work. Monthly surveys over late summer-early autumn were used to assess the outcomes of GOS on instream environmental conditions and fish communities. In comparison to unmodified negative control sites, GOS sites more closely resembled natural floodplain morphology, and were associated with greater riffle habitat, wetted width, and number of channels.
Although the differences in native diversity, absolute abundance and relative abundance of fish species between treatments were non-significant, the results suggest some potentially meaningful effects that warrant further investigation. To further ascertain the potential of GOS for instream braided river restoration, we recommend longer-term monitoring alongside future studies which incorporate more sample sites over broader spatial scales.
