Replication data for: Population Dynamics of the Leafminer Fly (Liriomyza Huidobrensis Blanchard) and its Associated Parasitoids in Two Contrasting Peruvian Potato Agroecologies

Listed in International Potato Center

The studies were carried out on the experimental stations of the International Potato Center (CIP) at La Molina/Lima (lowland, 12º 05' S, 76º 57' W, 250 m asl) and Santa Ana/Huancayo (highland, 12º 00' S, 75º 22' W, 3250 m asl).

Description

La Molina represents the typical subtropical desert climate of the central Peruvian coast with a mean annual precipitation and temperature of 6.4 mm and 19.7 ºC, respectively. The highest and lowest monthly mean temperatures occur in February (24.4 ºC) and August (15.8 ºC).

All crops are cultivated under irrigation and potato is grown during the winter season from May to October. By contrast, the Mantaro valley has one rainy season from September to April with a mean annual precipitation and temperature of 646 mm and 12.2 ºC, respectively, which determines the major potato cropping period. During winter from May to August (dry season), crops are cultivated in some areas of the Mantaro valley under irrigation.

The minimum temperature during the winter season reaches -0.1 ºC in July, and during summer from January to March about 6.5 ºC . The maximum temperatures are lowest during summer with an average of 19 ºC, and highest in November (21.2 ºC), with a second peak in May (21 ºC). For monitoring the population dynamics of L. huidobrensis, potato (S. tuberosum var.

Canchan) and faba bean (V. faba, var. Munay Angelica) were planted as host plants on 346 m2 plots in intervals of two months on each experimental station with four (lowland) and six (highland) consecutive planting dates at each location, respectively. The plots of the two host plants were arranged in a completely randomized block design with three repetitions.

Each plot consisted of 6 rows 0.90 m wide and 10 m long (54 m2); only the four central rows were considered for field evaluations. Standard cultural practices for fertilization, weeding and disease control were applied but without insecticide applications.
