SAGHAS - Sowing AGrobiodiversity to HArvest Sustainability: a multi-source database of crop species cultivated for human food

Yet, only nine crops provide more than 60% of the calories consumed worldwide. In the face of accelerating climate change, biodiversity loss, and malnutrition, there is an urgent need to broaden the range of food crops supporting sustainable agriculture and resilient food systems.

Here, we support efforts to effectively mobilize crop diversity by compiling a comprehensive list of 2,449 crop species used for food. Using multiple sources of information, we provide associated data on functional traits, human uses, and global distribution across native and introduced ranges. Up to now, this information remained fragmented across multiple and heterogeneous databases that vary in scope, structure, and standards.
