Checklist of Vascular Plant Species in Communities Hosting Atraphaxis decipiens in Ulytau, Central Kazakhstan

Listed in GBIF

This checklist documents vascular plant species recorded in communities associated with Atraphaxis decipiens Jaub. & Spach in the Ulytau low-mountain massif of Central Kazakhstan.

Description

The dataset was compiled from geobotanical surveys conducted in July 2025 and supports the documentation of the proposed Important Plant Area (IPA) “Petrophytic Steppes of Ulytau with Atraphaxis decipiens”. Records originate from relevés and floristic observations in petrophytic steppe and xerophytic shrub communities occurring on rocky slopes, gravelly substrates and stony surfaces.

The current IPA concept is based mainly on localities GPS 148, 149, 151 and 154, while GPS 136 is retained as a supplementary locality representing the same ecological setting outside the proposed boundary. After taxonomic standardisation, the checklist contains 57 accepted vascular plant taxa. Vegetation includes petrophytic steppe, shrub–wormwood–grass communities, forb-rich steppe and onion-dominated assemblages on light chestnut and shallow stony soils.

Among the recorded species are Tanacetum ulutavicum, Artemisia semiarida, Tulipa patens, Tulipa schrenkii, Allium galanthum, Iris scariosa, Rosa persica, Peucedanum morisonii and Medicago falcata. Several taxa are regionally important, protected, endemic or valuable as forage, medicinal or ornamental plants. The dataset is intended for conservation planning, IPA assessment, habitat monitoring and future studies of petrophytic steppe ecosystems in Central Kazakhstan.

It is particularly relevant to IPA subcriteria B2, B3 and C3, reflecting concentrations of botanically significant species, socio-economically valuable plants and vulnerable habitats. Note on checklist reliability Scientific names were harmonised using POWO, WCVP, IPNI and regional floristic references. Several field names were updated to currently accepted taxa, including Lomelosia isetensis, Lolium arundinaceum subsp. orientale, Poa versicolor and Potentilla inclinata.

Some records may require additional herbarium verification and should be regarded as provisional until confirmed by further taxonomic review.
