Acid sulfate soils — Areas

Listed in Queensland Open Data Portal

Description

***This dataset is available on Brisbane City Council’s open data website – data.brisbane.qld.gov.au. The site provides additional features for viewing and interacting with the data and for downloading the data in various formats.*** This dataset includes acid sulfate soil areas within the Brisbane City Council. This data was developed in 1997 by Council with assistance from the Queensland State Government.

Acid sulfate soils are safe until disturbed and exposed to oxygen. When this occurs, sulfide minerals oxidise and form sulfuric acid which can cause damage to the natural and built environment. This map is intended as a guide and should only be used as a screening tool to quickly determine the potential of a portion of land to host acid sulphate soils, not as a substitute to sampling and analysis in accordance with recognised technical sampling guidelines and laboratory analysis.
