Description
Dataset Overview and Spatiotemporal InformationThe dataset, titled "Network Analysis Dataset: Rest Intolerance — Time Poverty — State Anxiety — Big Five Personality," is designed to investigate the psychological network structure and interactive pathways among these constructs in contemporary university students. Data collection was conducted between March and April 2026 (

Year can be adjusted as per actual condition) at a public undergraduate university in Anhui Province, China. The electronic questionnaires were administered via the WenJuanXing online platform (www.wjx.com) and completed autonomously by participants using digital devices such as smartphones or personal computers. The spatial resolution of the dataset is constrained to the institutional/university level, and the temporal resolution represents a single cross-sectional assessment.
This study received formal approval from the Research Ethics Committee of Anqing Normal University (Ethic Number: No. AQNU2025069), and electronic informed consent was obtained from all participants prior to data entry.2. Data Acquisition, Processing Steps, and Quality ControlUtilizing a convenience sampling method, a total of 589 questionnaires were initially collected. The data cleaning and processing pipeline involved the following steps:Exclusion of Invalid Responses: Systematic screening was executed to exclude 48 invalid responses characterized by exceptionally short completion times (e.g., less than 60 seconds), patterned or invariant responses (e.g., selecting the exact same option for all items), or explicit logical contradictions.Final Sample: A rigorous final sample of 541 valid responses was retained, yielding an effective response rate of 91.85%.
The mean age of the valid sample was 20.18 years (SD = 1.34, range = 18–25), comprising 153 males (28.3%) and 388 females (71.7%).Missing Values and Error Specifications: Due to the mandatory response setting configured in the online survey platform, this dataset contains zero missing values. Potential systematic errors are limited to common method biases inherent in self-report psychometric scales, such as social desirability or central tendency biases.
Furthermore, because the "Cognitive Bias" dimension of the Rest Intolerance Scale-Short Form (RIS-8) exhibited unacceptably low internal consistency in this sample (Cronbach’s α = 0.541 < 0.60), this specific dimension was entirely omitted from the dataset to prevent unmodeled measurement errors from distorting the network analysis. Consequently, the rest intolerance community within the network is represented by three robust nodes: Negative Feelings, Social Comparison, and Obsessive Thinking.3.
Data File Structure and Variable LabelingThe dataset typically consists of two primary files: Raw_Data.csv (individual participant responses) and Network_Matrix.csv (the derived correlation or adjacency matrix). The dataset contains 541 rows of records (excluding the header row), with each row representing an individual participant. The column labels and measurement units are operationalized as follows:Demographic Variables: Gender (coded as 1 = Male, 2 = Female); Age (measured in years); Major (Major category: 1 = Liberal Arts, 2 = Science, 3 = Engineering, 4 = Arts/Sports, etc.); Only_Child (Only-child status: 1 = Yes, 2 = No); Origin (Place of origin: 1 = Urban, 2 = Rural).Big Five Personality Traits (CBF-PI-15): Rated on an integer Likert scale from 1 (completely disagree) to 6 (completely agree).
Column labels are N_Score (Neuroticism), C_Score (Conscientiousness), A_Score (Agreeableness), O_Score (Openness), and E_Score (Extraversion), representing the summed composite scores of corresponding items (with reverse-scored items properly inverted).State Anxiety (STAI-State): Rated on an integer Likert scale from 1 (not at all) to 4 (almost always). The column label is State_Anxiety, which represents the unidimensional aggregate total score of all 20 items (range: 20–80), serving as a single node in network estimation.Perceived Time Poverty (CSPTP): Rated on a Likert scale from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree).
Column labels include the dimensional sums: TP_Pressure (Time Pressure), TP_Needs (Personal Time Needs), TP_Conflict (Academic & Leisure Conflict), TP_Urgency (Time Urgency), alongside the global total score TP_Total.Rest Intolerance (RIS-8): Rated on a Likert scale from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). Column labels represent the summed scores of the three valid dimensions: RI_Negative (Negative Feelings), RI_Social (Social Comparison), and RI_Obsessive (Obsessive Thinking).4.
Software Compatibility and Analysis ToolsThe dataset is stored in standard tabular formats (.csv / .xlsx) and can be seamlessly opened by mainstream statistical software such as Microsoft Excel, IBM SPSS Statistics, or Origin. For replicating or conducting Network Analysis, the statistical programming language R (Version 4.3.0 or higher) is highly recommended. The primary package ecosystem includes bootnet, qgraph, and glasso for estimating regularized partial correlation networks and centrality metrics.
R and its integrated development environment, RStudio, are open-source and can be downloaded from the Comprehensive R Archive Network (r-project.org/) and Posit (posit.co/), respectively.
