Orange Jessamine (Murraya paniculata L. Jack) Damaging Insects

Listed in RIN Data Repository

Orange jessamine (Murraya paniculata (L.) Jack.) is one of the traditional medicinal plants of Rutaceae.

Description

In cultivation or in their growth, these plants were attacked by various insects. An experiment with the purpose to determine the kinds of insects attacking the orange jessamine plant was carried out in the yard of the Indonesian Spice and Medicinal Crops Research Institute (ISMECRI) from April to December 2011.

The experiment was conducted by observing and collecting insects attacking the orange jessamine plant, counting the percentage of plants attacked, the intensity of the attack, and rearing immature insects to mature. Insects of Aphidoidea and Coccoidea were collected in a glass bottle containing alcohol 70%. Identification of insects was done by preparing slides of the insect specimen first and then observing under a compound microscope with 400x magnification.

Results showed that insects attacking the orange jessamine plant were leaf-spinning caterpillars (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), whiteflies (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), Diaphorina citri (Hemiptera: Psyllidae), Toxoptera aurantii (Hemiptera: Aphididae), Sanurus sp. (Hemiptera: Flatidae), mealybugs Planococcus minor (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), and Parasaissetia nigra (Hemiptera: Coccidae). Those insects were leaf-sucking and leaf-eating insects.

Among those insects, leaf-spinning caterpillars caused the most serious plant damage. The caterpillars left the epidermis layer, the time, the leaves became perforated. Besides loss-causing insects, beneficial insects (natural enemies) were also found, namely spiders (Arachnida) and mantids from the family of Mantidae.
