Establishing Taiwan\'s Regional Governments in the Urban-rural Interaction System from the Viewpoint of Local Governance

Listed in Harvard Dataverse

For the penetration of the globalization process to the traditional state-centered world capitalist system and the boost of the neo-liberalism on self-help local development, local spaces have become the major arena of global economic competition.

Description

Under these circumstances, the notion of integrating local resources via establishing regional governments thrives consequently. After comparing the thought of regionalism between the Atlantic Ocean, this paper suggests that although establishing regional governments can promote regional integration theoretically, its political meaning is much greater than its economical substance.

Not only is it unnecessarily helpful in promoting local economic growth, but also politically infeasible. Therefore, whether to establish regional governments should be people’s choice of their own life style rather than an experimental arena of state restructure in the fashion of neo-liberalism.
