SEX-DEPENDENT TYPE I INTERFERON SIGNALING EXACERBATES ALZHEIMER'S PATHOLOGY

Listed in NCBI GEO

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) disproportionately affects women, but the biological basis for this sex difference remains unclear.

Description

Using transcriptomic profiling of postmortem human AD brain tissue, we identified a sex-specific enrichment of interferon-alpha (IFN-α) signaling pathways in females. This immune signature was recapitulated in APP/PS1 transgenic mouse models, where female mice exhibited greater amyloid pathology, neuroinflammation, and neurodegeneration compared to males.
