Tribological Properties of High-Performance Ionic Liquid Polyethylene Glycol Lubricant
Listed in ScienceDB
Three new ionic liquids (ILs) were synthesized using lipoic acid as the anion and tetrabutylamine, tetrabutylphosphine, and triethanolamine as the cations; they were subsequently employed as lubricating additives in a polyethylene glycol (PEG) system.
Description
The physicochemical properties, adsorption performance, and tribological behavior of the resulting IL–PEG lubricants were systematically investigated and compared. The synthesized lipoic-acid-based ILs exhibited strong adsorption on metal surfaces, with adsorption strength correlating strongly with their molecular structures.
Tribological tests revealed that the addition of the lipoic-acid ILs significantly improved anti-friction performance (coefficient of friction reduced by 47.8%), anti-wear performance (wear volume reduced by 89.7%), and load-carrying capacity (maximum extreme-pressure load: 900 N) compared with the neat PEG. Notably, the IL–PEG lubrication system maintained a low and stable running torque and a consistently low friction coefficient under a high load of 400 N and a high frequency of 90 Hz, demonstrating excellent practical potential.

Combined with surface elemental mapping and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of the wear scars, the superior tribological properties are attributed to physical/chemical adsorption on the metal sliding interface and the formation of a tribochemical reaction film. This work provides theoretical guidance and mechanistic insight for the practical application of IL–PEG lubricants in water-based fire-resistant hydraulic fluids and metalworking fluids, among others.
