Parent-child Conflicts and Filial Piety

Listed in Harvard Dataverse

The conflicts of the relationship between the parents and children are our major research focus.

Description

Besides the usual explanation from the viewpoint of ill parenting styles and skills which have been proposed by many western researchers, we claim that the cultural factors should also be considered when discussing the parent-child conflicts. In Chinese, the most essential and influential cultural factor that regards the parent-child interaction would be the filial piety.

We use a four types conceptual framework to describe and delineate this concept--the filial piety in Chinese. According to the parent-child conflicts, we attempted to explore it in three aspects including frequency, situation, and solution. Our central concern is the relationship between parent-child conflicts and filial piety attitude the children hold.
