Enhanced woody biomass production in hybrid aspen through xylem-specific overexpression of Arabidopsis thaliana LBD genes

Listed in NCBI GEO

Woody biomass is a critical renewable resource for sustainable energy and material production, yet strategies to increase its yield while simultaneously improving quality remain limited.

Description

Here, we demonstrate that xylem-specific overexpression of Arabidopsis thaliana LATERAL ORGAN BOUNDARIES DOMAIN (LBD) transcription factors markedly enhances stem secondary growth and alters wood composition in hybrid aspen (Populus tremula × Populus tremuloides Michx., clone T89).

Using the LMX5 promoter to drive targeted expression of A. thaliana LBD4 and LBD11 in the developing xylem, we observed substantial stimulation of secondary xylem formation. Histological analyses revealed distinct roles for each gene: LBD4 primarily promoted xylem development through increased cell expansion, whereas LBD11 enhanced both cell proliferation and expansion. This dataset was used to analyze the LBD overexpression lines
