The agency used this series to examine the possibility that some Americans might have survived in captivity after prisoner of war repatriations at Odessa in World War II, after Operation Big Switch in Korea in 1953, after Cold War incidents, and in particular after Operation Homecoming in Vietnam in 1973.
Description
This series was used to prepare the report "POW / MIA's: Report of the Select Committee on POW/MIA Affairs," January 13, 1993, 103rd Congress, 1st Session.
This series consists of two pa rts: a group of staff created interim databases and a final database of merged casualty record files. The staff database files consist of 46 of the committee's databases that document the prisoner of war and missing in action cases examined by the committee. Some of the databases appear to be duplicates; the remainder have varied file structures and data elements that include case number, date and location of sighting, source and status of sighting, and name of individual.

The final database of merged casualty record files was created from sources at the Directorate for Information, Operations, and Reports (DIOR), Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Joint Casualty Resolution Center (JCRC). The data elements in the file include name, date of birth, identification number, type and place of casualty, and casualty status of the individual. This data comprises government records extracted from the Archival Research Catalog (ARC).
