Dataset - Association between hydration knowledge, behaviours and attitudes in structural women firefighters: a cross-sectional study

Listed in figshare

Firefighters are at high risk of dehydration due to the physical demands of the job and the environmental barriers to optimal fluid intake.

Description

Additionally, dehydration has been commonly noted among firefighters whether prior to beginning their shifts, during fire suppression tasks or after completing their work. This study aimed to assess the association between hydration knowledge, behaviours and attitudes in structural women firefighters.

Data was collected using a cross-sectional online survey from 330 participants from Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. The survey included a previously validated questionnaire assessing knowledge, fluid behaviors and attitudes towards hydration. Attitudes were assessed using scores divided into three barriers (physical, lack of container and lack of effort) and two facilitators (monitoring and social).

The mean result of the hydration knowledge questionnaire was 11.7 ± 2.0 out of 16 (73%). Self-estimation of daily fluid intake ranged from drinking less than 16 oz of fluid (2%), 16-32 oz (23%), 33-63 oz (40%) and at least 64 oz (35%). Most participants (85%) reported drinking fluids without experiencing thirst.

Knowledge was not found to be associated with hydration behaviors (p = 0.370). Significant correlations were found between fluid behaviours and all barriers and facilitators (p < 0.0001). Physical barriers were reported as the most prevalent limitation to hydration, whereas monitoring was perceived as the most significant facilitator.

These findings suggest that hydration interventions for women firefighters should prioritize individualized strategies that address occupational barriers and emphasize perceived facilitators rather than focusing solely on knowledge-based education.
