The Effects of the Cognitive Behavioral Group Counseling on the Illicit Drug Users

Listed in Harvard Dataverse

The purpose of the study was firstly to investigate the influences of social variables, i.e., the involvement of drug abuse, self-strength, self- esteem, the desire for control, irrational beliefs about drugs, drug-craving, on the intention to relapse.

Description

Secondly, it investigated the variables of demographic variables, i.e., sex, age, condition of marriage, education, occupation, relating to the intention of relapse, in order to build a model of illicit drugs relapse.

The subjects of the study were sampled from the Drug abstention and treatment centers in Taipei, Hsinchu, Taoyuan(for female), Taichung(include Taichung Women Correction Center), Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung(for female), and Pingtung. The stratified random sampling according to sex and scale of the Drug abstention and treatment centers was used, then a sample of 1950 illicit drugs abusers were obtained. The valid sample is 1632, and the valid rate of returning is 84%.

The data of the study was analyzed by descriptive statistics, Chi-square, t-test, ANOVA, correlation, factor analysis, multiple regression, etc. The main results of the study are as followings: 1.Males have higher self-confidence, emotional stability, and desire of leadership and self-decision, in contrast, females get more points on precautious thoughts. 2. The older subjects have more self-strength than the younger. 3.

The subjects who are single and without fixed jobs show more likely to initiate the craving for illicit drug abuse and have more possibility and intention for drug retaking than the subjects who are married and have fixed jobs. 4. Those subjects who have low self-strength and self-esteem have more irrational beliefs about illicit drugs, higher craving for drug, and have higher intention for drug retaking. 5. The irrational beliefs about illicit drugs, drug reliance, and craving for drug, can significantly explain about 40.6% of the total variances of drugs relapse.

Most of subjects in this study used a variety of drugs, and the abusers of heroin and amphetamine is up to more than 80%. But the drug they take is mainly heroin. Therefore, the critical strategy of resistance and abstention of drug abuse is to through predicting and correcting this kind of drug abuse.

Finally, according to the drug-relapse model of this study, the correction strategy based on cognitive-behavioral psycho- therapy is needed, and applies to the correction institutions.
