Tri-layer degradable poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) composite blown films: Effect of tie layer and uniaxial stretching in multilayer structures on their performance

Listed in Borealis

Multilayer architectures offer an effective strategy for integrating complementary material properties, while the incorporation of functional fillers enables targeted enhancement of specific performance characteristics.

Description

In this study, tri-layer poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) films were fabricated via multilayer blown-film co-extrusion, comprising starch-filled PBAT as the middle layer to enhance barrier performance and promote sustainability, and mineral-filled PBAT outer layers containing either talc or calcium carbonate (CaCO3) to enhance stiffness, and barrier performance.

To overcome the inherently weak interfacial adhesion between dissimilar layers, a reactive tie layer based on maleic anhydride-grafted PBAT (MA-g-PBAT) was incorporated at both interfaces. The MA-g-PBAT tie layer acts as an interfacial compatibilizer by promoting molecular interactions and stress transfer between adjacent layers, thereby suppressing delamination and preserving structural integrity during subsequent uniaxial orientation.

Compared with tie-layer-free counterparts, the compatibilized multilayer films exhibited substantially improved interfacial cohesion, leading to enhanced impact resistance, approximately 38%, while minimizing the property losses typically associated with heterogeneous multilayer systems. Furthermore, the synergistic integration of mineral-reinforced outer layers, a starch-based core, reactive interfacial compatibilization, and uniaxial stretching produced degradable PBAT films with improved barrier performance, enhanced optical shielding, and robust structural stability without compromising processability.

This work demonstrates that MA-g-PBAT-enabled interfacial engineering is critical for realizing high-performance, filler-engineered biodegradable multilayer films and establishes a scalable manufacturing strategy for next-generation sustainable packaging materials with tailored multifunctional properties.
