M31 XMM-Newton AstroSat UVIT source catalogue

Listed in IVOA Registry (Virtual Observatory)

The X-ray source population of M 31 has been studied intensively with many different X-ray telescopes, including "The Deep XMM-Newton survey of M 31" that covered the entire D25 ellipse down to a limiting luminosity of ~10^35^erg/s in the 0.2-4.5keV band.

Description

In this study we tried to identify UV counterparts of the X-ray sources seen with XMM-Newton using the M 31 UVIT catalogue that is based on AstroSat observations. We studied the UV colour-colour diagram of the counterparts and we also fitted the UV spectra with simple phenomenological models that give formally acceptable fits for about 35 per cent of the sources.

Our investigation is complimented by an analysis of the X-ray spectral properties and their temporal evolution based on the X-ray spectral fits of the XMM2Athena project. We updated the classification of XMM-Newton sources with UVIT counterparts, if needed, by checking cross-correlations with more recent studies. In the UV colour-colour diagram, we found one source that is classified as "hard" in a region where apart from this source only foreground stars are located.

Apart from foreground stars (23) and "hard" sources (13), sources located in globular clusters (6) are most numerous among the sources with UV counterpart that give a statistically acceptable fit with our simple models. We used the UVIT data together with XMM-Newton optical monitor data to investigate spectral energy distributions of the sources. This allowed us to suggest classifications for sources that were just classified as "hard" sources in previous studies.

We updated the classification of 24 out of the 291 XMM-Newton source with UVIT counterparts. The list thus contains (including candidates of each class): 105 foreground stars, 22 globular clusters, 11 supernova remnants, nine X-ray binaries, of which six are suggested as high-mass X-ray binary candidates, eight galaxies, eight AGN, seven supersoft source candidates, two sources that are either an X-ray binary or a galaxy and another one that is either a galaxy or a globular cluster. 107 sources can still only be classified as "hard", while nine remain without any classification.
