Current Population Survey (CPS) Annual Demographic Files and Related March Surveys
Listed in Harvard Dataverse
The agency used the survey to generate the annual Population Profile of the United States, reports on geographical mobility and educational attainment, and detailed analysis of money income and poverty status.
Description
The agency used the labor force and work experience data from this survey to profile the U.S. labor market and to make employment projections. This series consists of public use microdata files containing core questions included in every CPS as well as detailed demographic data repr esentative of the non-institutionalized United States civilian population and male members of the armed services living in civilian housing.
The CPS is a household sample survey of approximately 50,000 households. These social survey data files supply standard monthly labor force data as well as occasional supplemental data on work experience, income, non-cash benefits, and migration. Comprehensive information is given on the employment status, occupation, and industry of persons older than 14, weeks worked and hours per week worked, reason not working full-time, total income and income components, and residence on March 1 of the survey year.

This series also has files with data covering nine non-cash income sources: food stamps, school lunch programs, employer-provided group health insurance plans, employer-provided pension plans, personal health insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, military health care, and energy assistance. Information on demographic characteristics, such as age, sex, race, household relationship, and Hispanic origin, is available for each person in the household surveyed.
This se ries also includes occasional separate releases with supplemental data on non-cash benefits, after-tax money income estimates, migration, and re-releases with revised weights. This data comprises government records extracted from the Archival Research Catalog (ARC). See the ARC catalog entry for this series for more information on this data and how to order it.
