Characterization of char produced by high and low temperature pyrolysis of paint sludge waste from the automotive industry
Listed in Borealis
Proper management and recycling of automotive paint waste are essential to mitigate its environmental and health impacts while enabling resource recovery and value generation.
Description
Pyrolysis offers an effective thermochemical pathway to convert such waste into energy and value-added products. In this work, automotive paint sludge waste was converted into char via pyrolysis at 550, 600, and 950 °C temperatures in an inert atmosphere.
The influence of pyrolysis temperature on the char yield, ash content, morphology, elemental compositions, thermal stability, and surface functionality was thoroughly investigated. The CHNS study indicated that oxygen is the primary constituent of char, a finding corroborated by SEM-EDX analysis. XRD study revealed the presence of titanium dioxide, ferrous oxide and alumina in both paint sludge and char.

Increasing the pyrolysis temperature from 550 to 950 °C did not substantially change the carbon and oxygen content in char materials. The paint char demonstrated significant thermal stability, as indicated by TGA measurements, with enhanced stability noted at elevated pyrolysis temperatures. SEM research suggested that the paint char particles displayed an aggregated spherical form with a coarse and uneven surface, but some exhibited a platelet-like morphology.
Py-GC/MS analysis verified that, as the pyrolysis temperature increased, most volatile hydrocarbons and oxygenated compounds were decomposed. The elevated thermal stability and turbostratic configuration of paint char can significantly enhance the mechanical performance and thermal characteristics of polymer composites.
