Longitudinal Study on Aging (LSOA) Files
Listed in Harvard Dataverse
The agency collaborated with the National Institute on Aging to create this series in order to measure changes in functioning and living arrangements of a group of older Americans.
Description
The series was created for several reasons: to collect data on the "oldest-old"; to describe the life course continuum from functionally independent living through dependence, including institutionalization, to death; to measure changes in the functional status and the living arrangements of older Americans; to provide mortality rates that were unavailable from the vital statistics system; and to obtain measures of health care use over time.
The records in this series were matched with three different databases, the National Death Index, and the multiple cause-of-death file, both maintained by the National Center for Health Statistics, and the Medicare Automated Data Retrieval System (MADRS) maintained by the Health Care Financing Administration. Baseline information for the LSOA was taken from the Supplement on Aging, a supplement to the 1984 National Health Interview Survey.

This series contains information collected over time from a cohort of older individuals as part of a health and social survey. Information was collected from a group of aging respondents about their health status, functioning, and changes in functional status over time (including limitation and restriction of activities, chronic conditions and impairments, acute conditions, activities of daily living, opinions about one's health status); health care use (doctor visits and hospital and nursing home stays, use of community services); demographic and socioeconomic characteristics (age, sex, race, marital status, education and income, family structure and changes in living arrangements over time); health insurance coverage (kind of health insurance the respondent has, hospitalization and other care covered by Medicare); and information about the respondent's death (including date of death, c auses of death).
This data comprises government records extracted from the Archival Research Catalog (ARC). See the ARC catalog entry for this series for more information on this data and how to order it.
