Abstract

The Fisheries Conservation at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center is tracking the annual migration of Alewife in the Chesapeake Bay. Our previous studies on river herring (Alewife and Blueback Herring) have investigated spawning run counts, spawning habitat use, population genetics, eDNA, temperature regimes and movement/survival (via PIT tagging). In 2022, 50 alewife were tagged in the Choptank River, MD to look at their movements within the tributary during the spawning season, migration timing, and habitat use in the ocean.
