ASCOS Aerosol Volatility (Leeds)

Listed in NASA Earthdata CMR

ASCOS was an interdisciplinary expedition to the central Arctic on the icebreaker Oden from 1 August to 9 September 2008.

Description

The expedition focused on processes relating to cloud formation in the summer Arctic and included observations of marine biology and chemistry, atmospheric chemistry, physical oceanography, aerosol chemistry and physics, and meteorology. Aerosol volatility spectra were obtained from 2 instruments operated by University of Leeds: a PCASP optical particle counter, and a Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer.

The sampled air to each was heated between ambient and 900 degrees C. Changes in size spectra with temperature allow chemical composition and mixing mode information to be inferred.
