Census of Agriculture Public Use Sample Files

The agency produced printed reports and computer data files containing the results of the Census of Agriculture. This series contains two parts; a 5 percent public use sample of responses to the 1987 Census of Agriculture by state, and a 10 percent public use sample of respo nses for the United States.

The 5 percent public use sample for states (except for Alaska; the New England states are combined into a New England file) consists of 19 data items, the Federal Information Processing System (FIPS) state code, and a record number. Data are presented by range code only with no exact numbers given and include land in farm (acres); harvested land irrigated; land set aside under annual Commodity Acreage Adjustment Program; land in Conservation Reserve Program; market value of agricultural products sold; Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code; tenure of operator; Commodity Corporation Credit (CCC) loans; government payments received; type of organization; corporate structure; residence on place; principal occupation of operator; days operator worked off-farm; operator of Spanish origin; years on present farm; and age, race, and sex of operator.The United States public use file consists of a 10 percent sample of farms enumerated in the 1987 Census of Agriculture.
