Bactericera cockerelli is a polyphagous insect that affects economically important Solanaceae such as potato (Solanum tuberosum), tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), eggplant (Solanum melongena), tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) and other wild Solanaceae (CABI, 2022).
Description
The damage caused can be in two ways, the direct one is produced mainly by the nymphs. When sucking the sap to feed, they secrete toxins to the plant, in addition to the excreta they leave on the leaves, they can give rise to the formation of saprophytic fungi.
The indirect damage is even more alarming since B. cockerelli is the vector of the bacterium Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum (CaLso) (synonymous Ca. Liberibacter psyllaurous). This bacterium causes the devastating disease called zebra chip or spotted potato (Pérez et al., 2021) The presence of B. cockerelli in Peru was confirmed by the National Agrarian Health Service (SENASA) in December 2021, reporting the first findings in the province of Huancabamba, department of Piura.

To date, and despite constant monitoring by specialists in the area, the detection of the bacterium Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum has not yet been confirmed, nor is the current distribution of the species in Peru known. The purpose of this study is to collect individuals of B. cockerelli at 31 points in the province of Huancabamba to update the distribution of this species in Peru.
