With the 1972 formation of the National Basketball League in the UK, the Ducks moved into the Brunel gymnasium and became a major force in the Middlesex league, being the only university-run team to compete at this level. They won a national league place in 1979 and won the Basketball League Championship in 1987. There was both a men's and women's basketball team at Brunel during the 1980s.
