Complementary systems for conceptual processing: Modality norms, ERPs, and RTs

Listed in DataCite

This is an interdisciplinary project with two studies.

Description

The first study (N = 42) gathered modality-exclusivity norms for 747 Dutch words, replicating Lynott and Connell's (2009, 2013) English norms. The results support the possibility that conceptual processing would work on complementary processes with different levels of detail.

The modality norms provide the stimuli for the second study. This is an ERP experiment (N = 47) that tests the role of perceptual simulation in the comprehension of words. A switching effect was found that spanned the time course of word reading, which suggests that perceptual simulation may contribute to the understanding of words in fundamental way.
