Distribution of symbolic capital and constitution of a Global Southern canon: framing the Red Sea International Film Festival

Listed in ZivaHub and Deakin Research Online and DMU Figshare — shown once because both records carry DOI 10.17034/32805602.v1

The Red Sea International Film Festival stands out as a novel initiative in a cultural environment that, until recently, had limited engagement with cinema due to long-standing restrictions and minimal exposure to film culture.

Description

While film festivals are widely recognised for facilitating cultural exchange and artistic recognition, their role in shaping the global circulation of cinematic value, especially for films from the Global South, remains insufficiently explored.

This thesis focuses on the first three Editions of the Red Sea International Film Festival (in 2021, 2022, and 2023) to investigate how it positions itself at the intersection of local identity, state objectives, and international recognition, and how it participates in the distribution of symbolic capital and the formation of a Global South film canon.
Drawing on Bourdieu’s concepts of field, capital, and habitus, along with other related theories, this study adopts a mixed methods approach, combining qualitative analysis of festival documents, public materials, and media coverage with interviews conducted with filmmakers, jury members, and Festival organisers.

This methodology provides a comprehensive understanding of the Festival’s strategic decisions and their impact on the film community, both within Saudi Arabia and internationally.
The findings indicate that the Red Sea International Film Festival strategically accumulates symbolic capital through the selection of diverse films, bringing together international juries and building collaborations with renowned festivals such as those of Cannes and Venice.

These initiatives enhance the Festival’s reputation and offer new opportunities for filmmakers from the Arab world and the Global South to attain greater visibility and legitimacy. The research further highlights the Festival’s ongoing negotiation between artistic ambition and the practical demands of national branding, commercial interests, and cultural policy. While programmes like the Red Sea Fund and Red Sea Lodge support emerging and under-represented voices, the Festival’s identity continues to be shaped by tensions between creative autonomy and broader political and economic priorities.

Ultimately, this thesis contends that the Red Sea International Film Festival is transforming Saudi Arabia’s position in global cinema and expanding the representation of voices and narratives from the Global South, even as it navigates the inherent complexities and challenges of the contemporary film festival landscape.
