Replication Data for: UPDs, Juvenile sex ratios vs litter size, 31 July 2026
Listed in data.InDoRES
Description
Marchwt = March body mass = Mother's body mass just before, during, or just after mating season Maywt = May body mass = Mother's body mass in May or June, when juveniles were first emerging from their natal burrow entrances On 26-27 May 2021, I check once again numbers for Marchwt and Maywt On 26-28 May 2021, I check Litter size, Male babies, and Fem babies TWO TIMES See below for checking of other data Male juveniles = number of male weanlings in litter Female juveniles = number of female juveniles in litter Mother's age = number of years since her first emergence from natal nursery-burrow Yearlings = number of weanlings that survive for >=9 months since first emergence from natal nursery-burrow Weanling = juvenile at first emergence from natal nursery burrow Parturition = 0 = female did not give birth or lost litter soon after copulation Parturition = 1 = female DID get pregnant and give birth Final age = last age when female was seen at study colony All UPD data in this EXCEL file and Fig 24.4 from single Horse Corral Colony (HCC) at Bryce Canyon National Park from 1995 through 2005 Much of this file comes from file = Utahpart, which was checked TWO TIMES for (Hoogland 2013, J Mammal) No teats = no visible teats in May or June TDF = teats tiny, dry, and flat in May or June = no parturition or early abortion SDF = teats small, dry, and flat in May or June = early abortion MDF = teats medium, dry and flat in May or June = loss of litter in mid-lactation LDF = teats long, dry, and flat in May or June = loss of litter in late lactation to predation or infanticide Mixing = mixing/interacting/sleeping of weanlings from two litters before I could capture, eartag, and mark all weanlings from both litters--so that assignments of maternities and littermate sibships were difficult or impossible OR = Original Resident in first year of research at study-colony, so that I did not know exact age Earlier version of this file contained information on Minimal Copulations = Mincops and Maximal number of copulations = Maxcops.
This information has no relevance to UPD juvenile sex ratios vs litter size, so I have deleted that information Cop = copulation Wt = body mass Patur = parturition The P-value for the negative correlation in Fig 24.4 comes from a linear mixed model that also considered the effects of maternal age and maternal body mass during the mating season, with maternal identity (unique eartag number as a random effect) Females that were known to give birth sometimes were classified as either tiny or TDF in May or June.

So, information on Partur for this file might be unreliable unless the condition was either lac, MDF, or LDF. 29 May 2021: The following variables have been checked TWO TIMES: UPD, Eartag, Marchwt, Maywt, Mothage, Final age, Litter size, Yearling, Maxcop, Mincop Still to check: Partur. I probably will NOT double check this variable--because often hard to quantify Marchwt and Maywt were checked TWO TIMES with weights in Eartag summary sheets, all of which were checked ONE TIME ONLY For some UPDs in 2005, I have added an "x" to the eartag number-- to avoid confusion with UPDs in early years that had the same eartag number.
Duplicate eartags might have occurred with the following letters: A, C, F, H, Correction on 30 Sept 2021: Litter size of 5 added for HRS (C65) in 1998 (was missing data) Note on 26 Oct 2021: As I enter male and female babies, I check Marchwt and Maywt File name = UPDs, Juvenile sex ratios vs litter size, 31 July 2026 Copious notes follow. Most of them will be/might be useful to John Hoogland only. Consider using THIS DATASET for completed analyses such as body mass vs litter size, body mass vs wean, body mass vs parturition, and so forth I will revise certain cases after getting information about maternities and paternities from microsats via Steve Keller Microsats = microsatellites, which helped to assign maternities and paternities If an estrous female and a sexually active male went to bed TOGETHER AT THE SAME TIME, I scored that as a definite cop.
If they woke up together but did not go to bed together, I scored that as a possible cop under Maxcop, but NOT as a cop under Min cop. If they went to bed together at DIFFERENT TIMES, I scored that as s a possible cop under Maxcop, but NOT as a cop under Mincop. I score a 2-min BD as a good cop.
I do NOT score BDs of 0.5 min or 1 min as good cops. However, I score every ABOVEGROUND COP as a good cop--even if for only 30 sec 1st of 2 cops = 1 = data from first cop only for double-estrous females. I will EXCLUDE these cases (N = 3) from analyses of ARS and LRS.
I will INCLUDE these data for examination of polyandry When a male and an female woke up together on the day after the female's estrus but did NOT go to bed together at the same approximate time, I wonder how often they copulated… Note on 14 June: I must add 6SBS (P51) from 1999--No litter, No yearlings--see below for incorporation of these changes Note on 16 June 2021: Note change for 96 (R23) 2003. Yearlings now 5 instead of 2.
So, two changes for this file as of 16 June 2021. This file is also in Folder for chapter on Polyandry. I have NOT done the stats for this file for polyandry vs ARS of UPD females.
I will wait until I analyze stats for Litter size and yearlings--to verify that information is correct. 6SBS (P51) from 1999--No litter, No yearlings. Added on 07 Sept 2021. 6SBS from 1999 is NOT in analysis completed on 30 May 2021 Change for 96 (R23) 2003 made sometime after May 2021. 96 from 1999 is NOT in analysis completed on 30 May 2021 Change for RAB (C11X) in 2005: Two cases were entered for this same dog. I have retained case #793, and I have removed all the key information from case 833.
Note these changes in early September 2021. They will affect the figures for UPDs, ARS for babies and UPDs, ARS for yearlings I have exact ages for >700 UPD females. So, I will only use estimated ages for a few original residents who lived for >=5 years old.
If a UPD females weaned 6 babies but a predator captured 2 before we could catch those 2, I used Litter size = 4 for sex ratio (example here) Male babies = number of MALE babies in litter. Fembabies = number of FEMALE babies in litter Marchwt = body mass taken before 15 April May or June wt = body mass taken in May or June. If two body masses were available in May and June, I used the LATER body mass in most cases.
But, for females, I used the body mass closest to the weaning data if two body masses were from May and June Date = 27 Oct 2021 File name = UPDs, Sex ratio vs age, body mass, 27 Oct 2021 I created this file by starting with the following file: File name = UPDs, FEMS, ARS, with Mincops, 30 May 2021 On 26-27 May 2021, I check once again numbers for Marchwt and Maywt On 26-27 May 2021, I check Litter size, Male babies, and Fem babies ONE TIME ONLY, and I detect only a few errors (<7) Because I detect NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER for any correlations with UPD sex ratios, I do not check Male babies and Female babies a second time.
Comments are in computer file in Column-T. I have NOT printed those comments for the hard copy. See below for checking of other data Much of this file comes from file = Utahpart, which was checked TWO TIMES for (Hoogland 2013, J Mammal) File name = UPDs, FEMS, ARS, with Mincops, 30 May 2021 Females that were known to give birth sometimes were classified as either tiny or TDF in May or June.
