Cloud-top and cloud-base height products from active–passive synergistic observations of DPC and ACDL onboard the DaQi-1 satellite (2023)

Listed in ScienceDB

Description

The Directional Polarimetric Camera (DPC) and Aerosol and Carbon dioxide Detection Lidar (ACDL) onboard the DaQi-1 (DQ-1) satellite together constitute an active–passive synergistic observation system combining multi-angle polarimetric measurements and active lidar observations, providing essential data support for the retrieval of global-scale cloud vertical structure parameters. This dataset contains global cloud vertical structure products generated from DPC observations acquired from 1 January to 31 December 2023.

The products were generated using the physics-informed Active–Passive synergistic Deep Learning framework for Cloud Top and Base Height retrieval (APDL-CTBH). The framework fully exploits the multi-angle, multispectral, and polarimetric observations from DPC, incorporates cloud-layer information provided by ACDL, and enables a synergistic active–passive cascade retrieval approach for Cloud Top Height (CTH) and Cloud Base Height (CBH).

Meanwhile, cloud optical properties derived from DPC observations are incorporated into the retrieval process as physical constraints to improve the accuracy and physical consistency of the retrieved cloud vertical structure parameters. The CTH and CBH parameters provided in this dataset are of significant scientific value for investigating cloud vertical development, cloud–aerosol interactions, and the long-term climate feedbacks of clouds.

Independent global validation using observations from the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) and the co-platform ACDL demonstrates the robustness of this dataset under various cloud conditions and observation scenarios. The correlation coefficients between the retrieved CTH and independent observations range from 0.68 to 0.87, while those for CBH range from 0.70 to 0.86. The mean biases for CTH and CBH are −0.65 to +0.02 km and −0.61 to −0.04 km, respectively.

This dataset is organized by satellite observation orbit and stored in NetCDF format. Each data file corresponds to one DPC observation orbit of the DQ-1 satellite and contains CTH and CBH products, together with associated geolocation information and auxiliary observation parameters.
