The Picidae were well represented in the collection and included Alfred Malherbe's woodpeckers (1200 specimens acquired in 1860), at the time one of the most important collections of this family in the World. In 1943, after an air-raid, Turati's collection was reduced to less than 1,700 specimens, of which woodpeckers still represent an important part (230 specimens).
