Validation study of StepScan pressure tile system for mobility and balance measurement
Listed in UNB Libraries Dataverse Research Data Repository
This project was a head-to-head comparison of the StepScan(tm) pressure tile system with in-floor AMTI(tm) force plates for the measurement of centre of pressure (CoP) excursion during standing and locomotor tasks.
Description
Thirty adults participated in two phases: 15 young adults (mean 27+/- 8, range 19-48 yrs) and 15 older adults (mean 72+/-5, range 64-80 yrs). Simultaneous data were acquired from pressure tiles mounted on top of force plates during static standing, a 5-times sit-to-stand test, and a step-up/step-down task.
Study #1 recruited and tested the younger adult cohort, where the absolute and relative X-Y coordinates of the CoP were compared between the StepScan tiles and AMTI force plates. Although absolute position errors were as high as 20mm, errors in relative coordinates were <5mm for standing and stepping activity, suggesting a level of accuracy suitable for calculating standing an stepping stability parameters. These results were presented at the 47th Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Conference (May 2025).

Study #2 recruited an additional 15 older adults (>64 yrs) for two objectives: 1) To evaluate the agreement (Intraclass correlation coefficient, ICC (2,k)) between stability parameters derived from StepScan and AMTI CoP X-Y trajectories, and; 2) To evaluate the sensitivity of the derived stability parameters to detect age-related balance decline by comparing StepScan derived parameters between young and older cohort. Agreement between StepScan and AMTI derived stability parameters was high (ICC>.9) with parameter errors <5mm.
There was a small but significant decline in standing and stepping stability with age (R-sq=.2,p<.05). These results are currently in review.
