Variable-Coded Dataset of Representative Chinese Cases on Digital Platform Copyright Liability (2018–2026)

It is designed to examine the triggering, escalation, and limits of platforms’ copyright-related duties of care. The coded variables include the year of the case, court or publishing source, case number or identifying information, specificity of notices, prior warnings concerning protected works, repeated infringement by users, repeated infringement involving the same work, type of algorithm, work-based aggregation, popularity of the work, connection between the content and platform revenue, scale of infringement, platform response, measures taken, adequacy of those measures, and the final determination of liability.The materials were collected from publicly available judicial decisions, typical cases published by Chinese courts, and other publicly available case materials.

Each record includes a case number or other identifying information, a source URL, an assessment of source reliability, and verification notes. The dataset is intended to compare the relationship between the specificity and persistence of infringement risks, platform control capabilities, and the scope of necessary measures. It is not intended to estimate the overall rate at which Chinese courts impose liability in platform copyright cases.For several anonymized typical cases and some earlier cases, full judicial decisions were unavailable.
