Trophic ecology of Antarctic benthic suspension feeders.
Listed in NASA Earthdata CMR
In English: The gut contents of the more frequent benthic suspension feeders species of Hydrozoa, Pennatulacea and Gorgonacea in the Weddell Sea were examined during the Antarctic summers.
Description
The guts of all Cnidarian studied immediately after sampling appeared almost empty, without any prey except for some diatoms. This is in striking contrast to the results obtained in other marine areas where the gut contents are mainly zooplankton items and organic matter.
This results not support the hypothesis that Antarctic Cnidarian suspensions feeders should show a high feeding activity during the Antarctic summer when the seston;its potential food- is more abundant. The digestion time of the preys were studied after incubation of the Cnidarian colonies in a enriched environment. In this case, the guts contents were also empty and it was not possible to estimate the digestion time.

The benthic Cnidarian suspension feeders are probably too delicate as to overcome the stress of sampling. The main purpose of the study of Bryozoan faunais to fill in part the large lap on the knowledge of the fauna of Bryozoans of the Weddell Sea. Further, all collected material has to be properly labelled in order to provide a comprehensive collection of bryozoans from the Weddell Sea region. The study of specimens on board (and still;in vivo;) has allowed the observation of some details on the morphology and biology of the species which can not be deduced from fixed material.
Materials collected during de CS-EASIZ cruise have enlarged from 10 to 122 the number of known species present at the Weddell Sea. That means that around a half of the bryofauna as yet known for the whole Antarctica (264 species in the Hayward account), are present in Weddell Sea. An important number of undescribed, new or odd species remain to be fully described later on.
A similar systematic and ecological account preformed with the bryozoans are prepared for the hydrozoan and anthozoan faun a.Materials collected during de CS-EASIZ cruise:The sampling was mainly done with: Agassiz network (12 samples), depth network (10 samples), epibentonic skate (4 samples), bentopelagic network (1 sample), box corer (2 samples) and multibox corer (1 sample) in 23 stations between 120 and 2300 m depth. There was done vertical fishing of plankton (between 200 m and 0 m mainly) by means of the using of bongo and conical networks in the same stations as the benthos sampling.
