Listed in GBIF

Description

This dataset contains 3,726 occurrence records of mammals (and incidental records of birds, reptiles, and other taxa) detected during bird surveys and a study on leopards and prey abundance conducted in rainforest fragments and adjoining areas of the Valparai Plateau and Anamalai Tiger Reserve, Tamil Nadu, India, spanning from 1999 to 2020. The data are compiled from multiple survey efforts associated with three published studies: (1) Surendra, A. & Raman, T. R. S. 2022.

Fragment area and habitat quality underlie temporal decline and community changes in rainforest birds within long-isolated fragments. Ornithological Applications, in press. doi: doi.org/10.1093/ornithapp/duag040 — This data includes mammal detections during point-count bird surveys in 19 rainforest fragments conducted in 2000–2005 (by TRSR and HS) and 2019 (by AS and TRSR), corresponding to event groups birdsurvey:2000:mammals, birdsurvey:2005:mammals, and birdsurvey:2019:mammals (2) Hariharan, P. & Raman, T. R. S. 2022.

Active restoration fosters better recovery of tropical rainforest birds than natural regeneration in degraded forest fragments. Journal of Applied Ecology 59: 274–285. doi: 10.1111/1365-2664.14052 — mammal detections during 460 point-count bird surveys across 69 sites from November 2019 to March 2020, corresponding to event group birdsurvey:2020:mammals (3) Sidhu, S., Raman, T. Current Science 109(2): 323–330 — mammal detections (direct sightings and indirect signs) along 42 line transects (each 2 km) surveyed between November 2009 and June 2010, corresponding to event groups leopardsurvey:2009:directSign, leopardsurvey:2009:indirectSign, and leopardsurvey:2009:indirectLeoCanid. The complete dataset includes 35 taxa from 19 families across Mammalia, Aves, and Squamata, recorded by five observers (Akshay Surendra, Hari Sridhar, TR Shankar Raman, Priyanka Hariharan, and Swati Sidhu) using point count, line transect, and ad-hoc observation protocols.
