"They Stride like One": Sibling Relationships in Katherine Mansfield's Stories of Childhood

Katherine Mansfield’s 1915 story “The Wind Blows” has sibling characters – Matilda and Bogey – who “stride like one” unified being. Similarly, siblings and childhood “stride like one” across Mansfield’s oeuvre. This thesis will examine the role of siblings in Mansfield’s innovative, accurate and nuanced depictions of children and childhood through close examination of twelve stories: “The Little Girl”, “New Dresses”, “Prelude”, “At the Bay”, “Sixpence”, “Sun and Moon”, “The Doll’s House”, “The Wind Blows”, “The Garden Party”, “Her First Ball”, “An Ideal Family” and “The Daughters of the Late Colonel”.</strong></p>
