Effects of Coaching on Standardized Test Scores Study Files

Listed in Harvard Dataverse

The agency conducted this study to determine whether coaching improved the students' performance on entrance examinations and academic achievement or if the commercial coaching schools engaged in deceptive advertising and unfair competition.

Description

The agency used the results to determine if the schools engaged in deceptive trade practices and to make policy recommendations. This series contains records of persons who took the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) in the New York metropolitan area (New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut) and records of persons who took the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) in the metropolitan areas of Boston, New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles between October 1974 and December 1976.

The records include demographic information on the test takers, their grade point average, their test scores, whether they received coaching, and a series of elements used to measure the influence of the coaching upon their test performance. This data comprises government records extracted from the Archival Research Catalog (ARC). See the ARC catalog entry for this series for more information on this data and how to order it.
