Natality Detail Files

This series contains information gathered from birth certificates registered in the United States. Beginning in 1985, information gathered from birth certificates registered in all 50 states and the District of Columbia are included and, beginning in 1994, birth certificates registered in U.S. territories are included a s well.

The records include demographic information on age and race of the parents, marital status and education of the mother, and geographic identifiers such as region, division, state, territory, county and metropolitan statistical areas. Also included are clinical information on medical risk factors and birth outcomes, as well as information on prenatal care and risk factors such as tobacco use, alcohol use, and weight gain during pregnancy.
