Demographic and Health Survey Files

Listed in Harvard Dataverse

The agency sponsored the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) program in order to collect international population and health information for policy makers and researchers.

Description

The results of the DHS were used to: 1) provide population and health data to leaders in survey countries; 2) develop the skills and resources necessary for participating countries to conduct high-quality demographic and health surveys; 3) improve survey methods used to analyze populations in developing countries; and 4) expand and improve the worldwide body of information on population and health.

The agency initiated the DHS in September 1984 as a five year follow-on activity to the World Fertility Survey (WFS) and the Contraceptive Prevalence Surveys (CPS) programs which were carried out from 1972-1984 and 1977-1985, respectively. This series consists of country by country longitudinal social surveys of health and population. These data are derived from a national sample of women from the host country aged 15-49.

These data contain the following types of information: background characteristics; lifetime natality; birth control knowledge and use; maternity and breastfeeding; immunization of children; diarrhea, fever, and cough in children; height and weight of children; marriage; fertility preference; husband's background; and woman's work status. Some of the data files also contain information about natural family planning, social marketing, sterilization, pill compliance, maternal mortality, causes of death, Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), and woman's employment.

The files are formatted as raw data files that contain the woman's data as it was collected on the questionnaire and as recode data files that contain the woman's data in a standardized format that is comparable across countries. There are DHS data files for the following countries: Bolivia; Botswana; Brazil; Burundi; Colombia; Ecuador; Ghana; Guatemala; Indonesia; Kenya; Liberia; Mali; Mo rocco; Ondo State (Nigeria); Peru; Senegal; Sri Lanka; Thailand; Trinidad and Tobago; Tunisia; Zimbabwe; and Dominican Republic.

This data comprises government records extracted from the Archival Research Catalog (ARC). See the ARC catalog entry for this series for more information on this data and how to order it.
