Data supporting "The effect of intensive praziquantel treatment on vaccine-specific responses among schoolchildren in Ugandan schistosomiasis-endemic islands: results of the POPVAC A randomised, controlled trial"

POPVAC A was an open-label randomised controlled trial of intensive versus standard intervention against Schistosoma mansoni among schoolchildren (9-17 years) in Koome islands, Uganda (ISRCTN60517191). The aim of the trial was to comprehensively address the hypothesis that Schistosoma mansoni infection causes suppression of responses to unrelated vaccines and that this effect can be reversed by intensive treatment with praziquantel.

The trial population was selected to comprise children at intense risk of exposure to Schistosoma mansoni infection in a “hot-spot”, island setting in Lake Victoria, Uganda. A portfolio of vaccines, of potential benefit to the children and comprising live, inert, oral and parenteral, was provided to enable a comprehensive assessment and comparison of effects of intensive treatment of Schistosoma mansoni on immune response to vaccines with different characteristics.
