Stand Initiation Diversity Experiment (SIDE): longitudinal tree growth, survival, and species data from a forest biodiversity experiment in West Virginia, USA

Listed in figshare

The Stand Initiation Diversity Experiment (SIDE) is a controlled forest biodiversity experiment established in May 2012 at the Clements State Tree Nursery in West Columbia, West Virginia, USA (38.9586° N, 82.0851° W).

Description

SIDE was designed to test how tree species richness and species evenness influence forest ecosystem functioning during stand initiation.

SIDE uses a completely randomized design in which planted species richness and evenness were manipulated independently.

Mixture treatments include four richness levels (3, 5, 7, and 9 species) and two evenness levels: even mixtures and uneven mixtures with an approximately 3:1 abundance ratio between dominant and minor species. Each richness × evenness combination has 21 replicates, together with single-species controls, for a total of 182 experimental plots. Species were drawn from a pool representing major tree genera of Central Appalachian forests, and planted tree locations were spatially referenced.

This release contains the cleaned, compiled individual-tree census dataset
SIDE_data_cln_02092022.csv
.

The dataset contains 15,246 TreeIDs distributed among 182 plot identifiers and repeated measurements from 16 May 2012 through 13 October 2017. Variables include TreeID, plot and within-site position, census date, tree status, species identity, tree height, and stem diameter. Height is recorded in centimeters for the early censuses, while diameter at breast height (DBH) is recorded in millimeters for later censuses.

Height and DBH were both measured during the October 2015 transition census to facilitate linkage between the two measures.

Tree-status codes used in the dataset are: 0 = live; 1 = dead; 2 = sick; 3 = missing; 4 = wrong species/species correction; and 9 = damaged or uprooted. The dataset supports research on biodiversity–ecosystem functioning, experimentally manipulated species richness and evenness, tree growth and mortality, early stand demography, species coexistence, neighborhood interactions, and temporal development of planted forests.

Table 1. Provisional SIDE species-code dictionary.
