While a body of research focusses upon siblings of children with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). less in known about the impact upon the relationship between parents and the typically developing child within the family and how to support this relationship where a negative impact is reported.
Description
Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) is a specific application of video feedback that seeks to enhance attunement, communication and relationship quality (Kennedy & Kramer, 2008).The current research explored the use of VIG in improving attunement (where the need to do so had been identified) between the typically developing siblings of children with ASD and their parents.
Parents views of the use of VIG was also investigated. Three parent-child dyads participated in four VIG cycles. The research adopted a mixed-methods approach exploring the effect of VIG on attunement.

The parents use of contact principles were compared prior to and after completion of four cycles of VIG. Parental self-efficacy and parental satisfaction were measured using TOPSE and the Kansas Parental Satisfaction Measure respectively as a pre and post measure. The researcher investigated the parents experience of VIG through a semi-structured interview and analysed the interview data using thematic analysis.
Analysis of video data indicated that while an overall increase in contact principles was evident for each parent-child dyad, this was not statistically significant. Parental self-efficacy increased for all three participants while parental satisfaction increased for two of the participants. Thematic analysis of the qualitative data suggests a positive impact upon attunement as a result of VIG.
The findings are discussed in relation to the literature while methodological strengths and limitations are discussed.<br>
