Evaluation of the 1981 Changes to the Aid to Families With Dependent Children (AFDC) Program Study Files

The agency conducted this study to assess the impact of the 1981 Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act on the AFDC program and to prepare the report "An Evaluation of the 1981 AFDC Changes." This series consists of interview, longitudinal, and cross-sectional data about former and active AFDC recipients.
Description
The data are from AFDC recipients in five cities: Boston, Massachusetts; Dallas, Texas; Memphis, Tennessee; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Syracuse, New York.
The interview file has data for 630 households taken off AFDC by the 1981 Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA). The longitudinal files have data collected for each city during two 13-month periods for over 11,000 households. The cross-sectional files have the same data as in the longitudinal files, but for over 11,000 households in each city 11 months after OBRA implementation.

The files contain information about the recipient's age, sex, housing, work experience, AFDC history, family composition, child care arrangements, sources of income, health insurance coverage, and strategies for coping with the loss of AFDC benefits.
