Sustainability, chemo-dynamics and remediation of climate-threatened soils in Barishal Division, Bangladesh

Listed in ZivaHub and Deakin Research Online and DMU Figshare — shown once because both records carry DOI 10.17034/32640852.v1

Barishal division, one of the main rice cultivation areas within Bangladesh has a high potential to contribute to the country’s national economy.

Description

This study employed a holistic approach, integrating surveys, soil sampling, simulation of nutrient bioavailability in paddy soils through the use of DGT, and compost amendments to assess and improve paddy soil health in Barishal. The comprehensive survey identified that environmental stressors such as – low soil health status due to low organic matter content of the soil, soil salinity and extreme climate events- prolonged flooding, cyclones/storms caused most of the impact on agricultural production.

Analyses conducted on the soil samples from the campaign (n=72), revealed that agro-ecological zones (AEZ) and salinity are key factors in geochemical dynamics, with salinity increasing coastward in GTF due to tidal influences, while YMEF showed complex but non-seasonal salinity patterns. To simulate the solute chemistry occurring in paddy soils under flooded conditions, we incubated 25 soil samples under anaerobic conditions.

Results showed that salinity impaired the mobility, retention, and partitioning of essential macro- and micronutrients (Ca, K, P, Fe, and Mn) in GTF, largely due to porewater Na. In contrast, the higher pH of YMEF soils influenced nutrient availability differently. Finally, to remediate saline soils, locally produced (FGC) and commercial (CC) composts were evaluated using soil porewater analysis and high-resolution two dimensional (HR-2D) imaging.

Nutrient responses were stronger with 5% compost treatments. HR 2D imaging at 100 µm showed localized nutrient fluxes, while 20 µm resolution revealed uniform distribution in FGC-amended soils but uneven distribution in CC-amended soils. These findings highlight the complex interactions between salinity, nutrient dynamics, and soil amendments in coastal paddy soils, which are critical for ensuring sustainable rice production in Barishal's vulnerable agroecosystems.

Thesis is embargoed until 31 July 2028.
