Survey Dataset on LLM Adoption and Health Information Seeking: User Behaviour, Satisfaction, and Demographic Influences

Listed in INESC TEC Research Data Repository

This dataset was created to support the research study titled "A Complementary Tool for a Sensitive Domain: How Users Seek Health Information Through LLMs", which investigates how users integrate Large Language Models (LLMs) into their information-seeking process, with a particular focus on health-related contexts.

Description

Data were collected through an online survey, yielding a total of 405 responses, of which 270 correspond to participants who reported using LLMs for health-related searches and were included in the health-specific analysis.

The dataset captures demographic characteristics such as gender, age group, education level, field of study and work, and whether participants have a chronic illness diagnosis. It further includes data on general LLM usage behaviour, covering frequency of use and the specific tools used as well as the stage at which participants integrate LLMs into their information-seeking process. User satisfaction with LLM-generated responses is assessed both for general and health-specific contexts.

For participants who reported using LLMs for health information seeking, the dataset also captures the frequency and types of health topics searched, spanning 18 categories including specific diseases, mental health, medical treatments, pregnancy, chronic pain management, and end-of-life decisions, among others. The dataset additionally includes qualitative open-ended responses and their categorisation. All data were collected anonymously and do not contain personally identifiable information.

Data collection complied with institutional data protection guidelines. The dataset includes the anonymised survey responses in Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) format and the survey instrument in PDF format. It also includes a variable dictionary describing all variables, coding schemes, and recoded variables to facilitate reuse and reproducibility.
